605 Freeway crash kills four and injures two as DUI suspect plows into stalled vehicle

Early Sunday in Norwalk 605 Freeway crash occurred resulting in 4 casualties, a Kia, driven by a 26 year old woman from bellflower who was allegedly intoxicated, sped into a stalled Nissan just after 1 a.m. on the southbound lanes north of Rosecrans, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Nissan had been disabled moments earlier in a separate crash with a CHP vehicle. When hit, it burst into flames, killing all four occupants.

The 605 Freeway crash also left the Kia driver and one passenger with major injuries. The driver was arrested on multiple felony charges, including DUI causing injury with a BAC of 0.0% or higher.

“It is extremely unfortunate… Ultimately, this is preventable,” CHP officer Zachary Salazar said, calling the crash “a tragedy” and stressing that law enforcement is investigating whether impairment was the cause.

All southbound lanes between Firestone and Rosecrans remained closed as crews worked the crash site.
