U.S. Proposes 60-Day Ceasefire Amid Hostage-Prisoner Swap Talks

60-day Gaza ceasefire proposal.

In a significant diplomatic effort, the United States has proposed a 60-day Gaza ceasefire aimed at facilitating the release of hostages and prisoners between Israel and Hamas. The proposal includes the exchange of 28 Israeli hostages for 1,236 Palestinian prisoners, along with the remains of 180 Palestinians.

The plan, backed by President Donald Trump and mediated by Egypt and Qatar, also calls for immediate humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza through international organizations. Israeli has accepted the proposal while Hamas is currently reviewing the terms.

Under the proposed 60-day Gaza ceasefire, Israeli would progressively redeploy troops and halt military operations as the truce takes effect. A permanent ceasefire would lead to the release of all remaining 58 Israeli hostages.

However, significant differences remain: Israeli demands Hamas disarm and dismantle, while Hamas insists on a full Israeli troop withdrawal and definitive end to hostilities.

The ongoing conflict, initiated by Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023, has resulted in over 54,000 Palestinian deaths and extensive destruction of Gaza. The proposed 60-day Gaza ceasefire aims to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and pave the way for a long term resolution.
