Donald Trump has ordered the redeployment of U.S. nuclear submarines near Russia, following a menacing tweet from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. The move marks a sharp escalation in nuclear posturing amid the ongoing Ukraine war.
Is Trump preparing a nuclear strike after Russia’s ultimatum?
Trump moves nuclear ships near Russia in response to what he called “highly provocative statements” from Dmitry Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy chairman of Russia’s security council. The order, shared via Truth Social, is widely seen as a clear warning from Trump that the U.S. is willing to raise the stakes if Russia continues its inflammatory rhetoric and military aggression.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions,” Trump posted. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
The dramatic decision came hours after Medvedev mocked Trump’s timeline for peace in Ukraine, saying any new ultimatum from Washington is a “step toward war with the U.S.”

Tensions reached a boiling point when Medvedev, known for his unfiltered and often hostile late-night posts on X (formerly Twitter), slammed Trump for reducing Russia’s deadline to comply with peace terms—from 50 days to just 10.
“Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10,” Medvedev wrote. “He should remember: Russia isn’t Israel or Iran. Each ultimatum is a step toward war—not with Ukraine, but with the U.S.”
Trump moves nuclear ships near Russia not only as a show of military readiness, but also as a signal to President Vladimir Putin, whom Trump recently criticized for “stalling” peace negotiations.
In recent weeks, Trump has publicly promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours if re-elected, though critics have dismissed the claim as unrealistic. Privately, Trump has voiced frustration with Putin, saying the Russian leader’s continued missile attacks and refusal to negotiate have undermined diplomatic efforts.
Putin silent, Medvedev rattles sabers, Trump flexes U.S. power
Despite rising tensions, Vladimir Putin has not directly responded to Trump’s threats or redeployment orders. Speaking Friday, he said only that Russia seeks a “lasting and stable peace,” but offered no signs of compromise. Meanwhile, Russian drones and missile strikes continue to devastate Ukrainian cities.
Medvedev’s remarks appeared designed to provoke—and they did. Trump, invoking nuclear deterrence, made clear he would not tolerate threats from the Kremlin, whether they come from Putin or his hawkish deputy.
With nuclear-capable submarines now deployed to undisclosed regions near Russian waters, Trump’s response has sparked renewed fears of escalation, especially as his peace deadline for Russia nears.
