Gaza City, May 18, 2025 – Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have resulted in at lease 100 Palestinian deaths overnight, according to Gaza’s health ministry. These attacks coincide with ongoing ceasefire negotiations mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States in Doha, which have yet to yield significant progress.
The recent escalation marks one of the deadliest periods since the conflict reignited in March. Entire families have been reported among the casualties, with strikes targeting residential areas and displaced persons camps. The Gaza health ministry stated, “Complete families were wiped off the civil registration record by Israeli bombardment.”
Israel’s military has not commented on the latest strikes but has previously indicated plans to intensify operations to achieve “operational control” in parts of Gaza. The Israeli government maintains that its actions are aimed at dismantling Hamas’ military infrastructure and securing the release of hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Hospitals are overwhelmed, facing critical shortages of fuel and medical supplies due to the ongoing blockade. The Indonesian Hospital, one of the largest in Gaza, has ceased operations following nearby Israeli fire. Aid organizations warn of an impending famine, with the United Nations describing the conditions as “catastrophic.”
Ceasefire talks in Doha have seen little advancement. Hamas has proposed a two-month ceasefire in exchange for the release of the approximately half of its Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. However, Israel insists on the unconditional release of hostages without halting its military campaign. A senior Israeli official noted minimal progress in the negotiations.
International reactions have been swift. Arab leaders, during a summit in Baghdad, intensified their condemnation of Israel’s military actions. Egytian President Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi labeled the campaign as “systematic crimes”, while Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani accused Israel of committing genocide. The United Nations Secretary-General emphasized that nothing justifies the collective punishment of Palestinians.
As the conflict enters its eighth month, over 53,000 Palestinians have been reported killed, with nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents displaced. The international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population.
