The Oxbow Bridge in Arizona was destroyed on August 1 after a brushfire swept through the area, severing a vital route linking the state to California. The blaze, known as the Oxbow 2 Fire, consumed the bridge in La Paz County, near the borders of Imperial and Riverside counties, according to the Arizona Republic. The wooden structure connected Levee Road to the west side of the Colorado River.
The fire burned roughly five acres near the Oxbow Recreation and Wildlife Area. Within two hours of catching fire, the bridge collapsed into the river. Authorities have warned boaters to stay clear of the area because of floating debris and hidden hazards downstream.
The bridge served as an important link for the small community of Cibola, though it was not the only route between Arizona and California. Riverside County borders La Paz County to the north, with Interstate 10 providing the main connection for travelers heading between the two states. From Imperial County, Interstate 8 out of San Diego remains the primary route into Arizona.
Officials have not provided an estimate for when or if the bridge will be replaced.
