One dead and one wounded were reported in South Los Angeles after a shooting linked to an attempted car theft on Saturday night.
The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. in an alley near the 8000 block of S. Hooper Avenue, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to the area after receiving information about a gunshot victim. They found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was hospitalized with injuries to the lower body, deputies said.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims.
“Investigators learned the victims were alerted to the sounding of a car alarm to their vehicle that was parked in the alley,” deputies said in the release. “They observed three suspects attempting to steal their vehicle.”
When the victims confronted the suspects, deputies reported that a fourth suspect near the south entrance of the alley drew a gun and opened fire.
According to deputies, one of the victims returned fire “in what appears to be self-defense.”
Investigators said the suspects left the scene in a red or burgundy four-door coupe, heading west on 81st Street.
