A shooting in a New York City nightclub left three people dead and nine others injured early Sunday in Brooklyn during a year when the city has reported record low gun violence.
Police said up to four shooters opened fire at Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights following a dispute just before 3:30 a.m. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters the attack appeared to be gang-related.
No arrests were immediately made. At a briefing, Tisch described the killings as “a tragic, senseless act of violence.”
The shooting was the second mass shooting in the city within weeks during a year of declining gun violence. On July 29, a gunman armed with a rifle moved through a Manhattan office building, killing four people and injuring another. A New York City police officer was among the dead.
Mayor Eric Adams said both incidents highlight the city’s ongoing effort to reduce gun violence. “This is the second within weeks, and we don’t want this to turn into a normal course of doing business of violence in our city,” he said.
Tisch said those injured Sunday were treated at hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. Victims’ ages ranged from 19 to 61. A 19-year-old man died at the scene, while two others, ages 27 and 35, died after being taken to hospitals.
Investigators recovered at least 42 shell casings from 9 mm and .45-caliber firearms, along with one weapon found in a nearby street.
Adams said crisis management teams were deployed to provide trauma care and to mediate with victims’ families and friends to prevent retaliation. He urged the public to assist investigators. “If you were inside the club, if you heard individuals talking about this shooting, if you witnessed someone fleeing the location, every piece of information will allow us to put the puzzle together,” he said.
Tisch noted that the city recorded its lowest-ever number of shootings and shooting victims in the first seven months of 2025. “Something like this is, of course, thank God, an anomaly and it’s a terrible thing that happened this morning, but we’re going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down,” she said.
