A 22-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Tyler Robinson was arrested Friday in St. George, Utah, after his father recognized him in photographs distributed by law enforcement and alerted authorities.

Arrest and Investigation

Robinson’s father initially urged his son to turn himself in. After Robinson refused, his father contacted a youth pastor who also serves as a U.S. Marshals task force officer. The officer advised that Robinson remain in place until authorities could apprehend him.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox disclosed during a Friday press conference that Robinson had grown increasingly political in recent years and had discussed Kirk’s campus appearance with a family member the night before the shooting. Evidence recovered from the scene included engraved bullet casings with messages such as, “Hey fascist! CATCH!” and lyrics from the Italian protest song “Bella Ciao.”

Law enforcement officials also reviewed messages between Robinson and his roommate that detailed plans to retrieve a rifle from a drop point, conceal the weapon in a bush, and change outfits before the attack. Robinson arrived on campus in a gray Dodge Challenger, which matched vehicle descriptions provided by witnesses.

Law Enforcement Response

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Robinson was apprehended within 33 hours of the shooting, with officers arriving on the scene within 16 minutes of the incident. Investigators had previously recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle—an imported Mauser .30-06 caliber—wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the university. The weapon, along with cartridge casings and other evidence, was sent to the FBI’s laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, for forensic analysis.

Authorities also collected palm prints, forearm impressions, and footwear evidence from the scene. Surveillance footage showed the suspect jumping from a rooftop after firing the fatal shot from a significant distance, demonstrating considerable proficiency with the rifle.

Background and Motive

Charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of the conservative group Turning Point USA, was shot and killed while speaking to an audience of approximately 3,000 people. The shooting is being investigated as a politically motivated assassination, though officials have not yet publicly detailed a specific motive.

Retired FBI agent Brad Garrett noted that the shooter’s ability to fire a single, lethal shot from a distance indicated significant practice or prior training with the weapon. Investigators are reviewing local gun ranges and shops for any connections to Robinson.

Ongoing Developments

The FBI had offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture and received more than 7,000 tips during the investigation. Robinson is currently in custody as state and federal authorities continue to develop the case against him.

Utah Gov. Cox expressed gratitude toward Robinson’s family for their cooperation, stating, “They did the right thing.”

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
