The incident unfolded early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island, according to officials. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they encountered a large, chaotic crowd and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

“Numerous victims and witnesses fled into nearby properties and businesses to escape the gunfire,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on X.

The office described the tragedy as “a heartbreaking and challenging event for everyone,” adding, “We ask for patience as investigators continue their work. Our thoughts remain with all the victims and their families.”

Deputies confirmed that four people were pronounced dead at the scene, while around twenty others sustained injuries. Among those hurt, four remain in critical condition at local hospitals, authorities said.
