Macron Warns the West Could Lose Credibility Over Ukraine and Gaza Wars

Macron warns the West and Asia.

French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned that the United States and Europe risk losing their global credibility if they fail to address the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Macron emphasized the dangers of perceived “double standards” in Western foreign policy.

Macron’s Call for Consistent Western Policy

At the annual Asia defense summit, Macron highlighted the importance of upholding international norms. He warned that allowing Russia to annex Ukrainian territory without consequences could set a precedent affecting other regions, such as Taiwan and the Philippines. “What is at stake in Ukraine is our common credibility, that we are still able to preserve territorial integrity and sovereignty of people,” he states.

Addressing the Gaza conflict, Macron acknowledged perceptions that the West has been lenient toward Israel. He stressed the need for a ceasefire and mutual recognition of Palestinian state, asserting that ignoring the situation undermines Western credibility globally.

Strategic Autonomy and Global Alliances

Macron advocated for “strategic autonomy,” encouraging countries to protect their interests while collaborating to maintain a rules based global order. He proposed a new alliance between Europe and Asia to prevent nations from becoming “collateral damage” in the power to struggle between the U.S. and China.

He also pointed out the interconnectedness of global conflicts, noting that North Korea’s support for Russia in Ukraine poses questions for all nations. Macron suggested that if China wishes to keep NATO out of Asia it should prevent North Korea from engaging in European conflicts.

Reactions and Implications

Macron’s comments have drawn criticism from Israeli officials, who accused him of rewarding terrorism by advocating for a Palestinian state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also criticized Macron and other Western leaders for allegedly siding with Hamas.

The French president’s remarks underscore the challenges facing Western nations in maintaining a consistent foreign policy. As conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza continue, Macron’s call for coherent and principled action highlightis the importance of credibility in international relations.
