The Department of Homeland Security, alongside ICE agents, executed search warrants at multiple sites in Los Angeles, including the Westlake District and downtown areas. According to Yasmeen Pitts O’keefe, a spokesperson for Homeland Secuirty Investigation, the raids were related to investigations into the harboring of individuals illegally present in the country.
Community Response and Protests
The sweeps prompted immediate backlash from the community. Over 300 immigrant rights activists gathered in downtown Los Angeles to protest the actions. The Los Angeles Police Department declared an unlawful assembly and authorized the use of less lethal munitions after reports of some protestors throwing objects at officers.
