Brian Wilson

Legendary musician Brian Wilson, co-founder and creative genius behind the Beach Boys, has died at 82. The announcement was made by his family on June 11, 2025.

Born on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, Wilson spearheaded the success of the Beach Boys alongside his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. As the principal songwriter and producer, he crafted golden-era hits like “I Get Around,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “God Only Knows,” and the defining album Pet Sounds praised by Paul McCartney and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Known for layering complex harmonies and studio experimentation, Wilson transformed teenage surf pop into sophisticated artistry. Yet his life was marked by turmoil battles with mental illness, substance abuse, childhood trauma, and later, a neurocognitive disorder that led to conservatorship in 2024.

Despite this, Wilson experienced remarkable comebacks: the completion of Smile(2004), acclaimed solo work, and celebrated reunions with the Beach Boys in live performances into his seventies.

Wilson’s wife of 28 years, Melina Ledbetter, passed away in January 2024. He was cared for at home under conservatorship. The family has requested privacy during this period of grief.

He leaves behind seven children and a global legacy from the Sun Belt’s “California sound” to influences on psychedelia, power pop, progressive rock, punk, alternative, and lo-fi.

Nancy Sinatra honored Wilson’s enduring impact:

“His cherished music will live forever.”

The cast of fellow Beach Boys, along with friends and fans worldwide, are paying tribute to a pioneer whose work resonated across generations.

As the Beach Boys “formative genius,” his music defined a generation’s aspirations and sense of place. His life story marked by brilliance and adversity mirrored the complexities of fame, mental health, and creative genius. His production techniques, vocal arrangements, and songwriting continue to inform modern music trends and artists.
