
A lone shooter was confirmed dead after opening fire near Emory University in Atlanta on Friday afternoon, according to authorities.
The Atlanta Police Department reported that one officer was injured “in the course of the response,” though the officer’s current condition has not been disclosed.
The university’s Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response issued an alert on X stating, “Emory Emergency: Active shooter on Emory Atlanta Campus at Emory Point CVS. RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area.” The shelter-in-place order was lifted around 6:30 p.m.
At least one person was injured during the incident, a hospital spokesperson confirmed. Emory University is a private institution in Atlanta with nine academic divisions, including Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Goizueta Business School, and Emory School of Medicine. The college has over 5,700 undergraduate students and is affiliated with Emory Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Georgia.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr expressed concern on X, writing, “We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community. We stand ready to assist our law enforcement partners with whatever they may need.”
Governor Brian Kemp also posted thanks to law enforcement for their swift response. “Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians. We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center,” he wrote.
The reported shooting occurred near the main campus of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that DeKalb County Police were on scene. The Atlanta Police Department and FBI also responded, according to social media updates.
Video footage showed officers directing traffic in the area near the shooting site. The Emory University Police Department, DeKalb Police Department, FBI Atlanta, Emory University, and CDC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
