The body of a missing man was recovered from Candlewood Lake on Saturday, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Officials said a 55-year-old man entered the water from a boat on Friday afternoon and did not resurface.
Litchfield County Fire Coordinator Bernie Meehan confirmed the search shifted to a recovery operation Friday evening. “There is a tipping point where it’s no longer viable to resuscitate someone that’s been underwater for two hours,” Meehan said.
Search efforts were suspended around 8 p.m. Friday and resumed Saturday at 9 a.m. Crews used sonar and divers to conduct the recovery.
“Our hearts are with the victim’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and hope they can find comfort and support as they grieve this tragic loss,” the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said in a statement.
“This incident is also a solemn reminder of the dangers that can come with recreating in and around the water. Even experienced swimmers can encounter unexpected challenges, and we urge all who enjoy Connecticut’s lakes and waterways to take every precaution for their safety and the safety of those around them,” the department added.
Multiple agencies assisted with the search and recovery mission.
