Bronx high-rise partially collapses with ‘loud boom’ no injuries reported so far

Authorities say search-and-rescue crews are combing through debris after part of a public housing high-rise in Mott Haven came crashing down.

A high-rise apartment building in the Bronx partially collapsed Thursday morning with a thunderous boom, sending bricks and concrete crashing to the ground and triggering a major emergency response across the city.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) confirmed the collapse occurred at 207 Alexander Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, a densely populated neighborhood. So far, officials say there are no reported injuries, but a search-and-rescue operation remains underway.

Witnesses describe ‘loud boom’

A witness told CNN affiliate WCBS that the scene shifted from routine to chaos in seconds.

“I was explaining to the lady [911 operator] what I saw, and she was like, ‘Hold on, let me transfer you to the fire department,’” the witness said. “Before she was about to do the transfer, the whole building just – you heard a loud boom, and the thing just exploded. And it fell down just like that.”

Video captured by a WABC helicopter showed an entire corner of the high-rise peeled away, exposing apartments inside and leaving piles of bricks littering the sidewalk.

Emergency response underway

FDNY said search teams were deployed onto the roof and inside the building to check for trapped residents. Crews were seen climbing through debris and using specialized equipment to stabilize the site.

The New York Police Department secured the perimeter, while NYC Emergency Management confirmed Con Edison shut off gas utility lines to the damaged property as a precaution against fires or explosions.

Officials have established a temporary shelter at a nearby community center on Alexander Avenue. MTA buses are also being used as emergency shelters for evacuated residents.

Mayor Adams monitoring closely

Mayor Eric Adams addressed the incident on social media, saying he was being updated by first responders.

“New Yorkers, I have been briefed about the emergency situation taking place in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx,” Adams posted on X. “We are getting a full assessment from first responders and will continue to provide updates. Please avoid the area for your safety.”

So far, there is no indication of what caused the collapse.

Building records show no violations

Public housing records reviewed Thursday showed the building had no open violations at the time of the collapse. Authorities have not yet determined whether the damage was linked to structural failure, gas issues, or another factor.

Residents from nearby apartments have been evacuated while engineers assess the stability of the structure.

A neighborhood in shock

The Mott Haven community, one of the Bronx’s most crowded districts, was rattled by the sudden collapse.

“This is terrifying. I live across the street and thought it was an earthquake,” said one resident, who was among those ordered to leave her building as a precaution.

Others described smoke and dust filling the air moments after the collapse, with neighbors rushing out into the streets.

Broader concerns about aging infrastructure

The collapse adds to growing concerns about aging infrastructure and the safety of New York’s public housing stock. The Bronx, in particular, has seen a series of housing-related emergencies in recent years, including fires, electrical failures, and building code issues.

While officials emphasize that Thursday’s collapse is still under investigation, the dramatic failure underscores the vulnerability of older structures in densely populated neighborhoods.

Next steps

FDNY said search-and-rescue operations would continue throughout the day to ensure no residents remain trapped. Engineers will also assess whether the rest of the building is safe for occupancy or must be vacated.

City officials said displaced residents will be offered housing assistance if the structure is deemed uninhabitable.

For now, the focus remains on securing the site and ensuring the safety of the surrounding community.
