(HIDALGO, Texas) — Federal officials have seized a staggering 77 pounds of cocaine at the Texas-Mexico border, with the narcotics estimated to be worth more than $1 million on the street. U.S. Customs and Border Protection made the discovery during a secondary inspection at the Hidalgo Port of Entry on Saturday.
According to a statement released Monday by CBP, officers encountered a 2020 Renault Oroch attempting to cross the international boundary. The vehicle was referred for additional screening after an initial review raised suspicion. During the follow-up inspection, a canine unit alerted agents to possible contraband, and a scan using the agency’s non-intrusive imaging system detected anomalies within the vehicle’s structure.
Upon physical examination, agents uncovered 30 separate packages hidden inside the car. The contents tested positive as cocaine, weighing approximately 34.90 kilograms, or 76.94 pounds. The street value of the seized cocaine is estimated at $1,027,316.
Port Director Carlos Rodriguez praised the officers involved, stating, “This substantial cocaine seizure reflects the strong dedication of our officers to safeguarding the border, as well as their skillful use of experience and technology.” He emphasized that efforts like these are critical to maintaining national security and disrupting the operations of international drug traffickers.
