Authorities have confirmed that multiple firefighters were reportedly short while responding to a brush fire near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The shocking incident unfolded in the Canifield Mountain are on East Nettleton Gulch Road, prompting an emergency shelter-in-place alert for nearby residents.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office warned the public of an active shooter, stating that injuries were reported, though the extent remains unclear.
Firefighting Efforts Halted Amid Gunfire
According to Chief Pat Riley of the Northern Lakes Fire District, gunfire forced fire crews to retreat, leaving the brush fire still active. Riley called the incident “heartbreaking,” adding, “We trained for this. You never want to see it in your own community.”
Despite the danger, firefighters remain on standby and focuses, while law enforcement from multiple agencies is assisting at the scene.

While evacuations are not currently planned, emergency officials are urging residents in the Canfield Trailhead and Nattleton Gulch Road are to Coeur d’Alene to stay indoors and remain alert. Anyone not already in the area has been told to avoid it completely due to ongoing law enforcement activity.
