The 16-year-old student who shot two classmates at Evergreen High School before turning the gun on himself had been “radicalized by some extremist network,” law enforcement officials said Thursday.
Desmond Holly, identified as the shooter, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday night after opening fire on the school grounds around 12:30 p.m. that afternoon. The attack left two students in critical condition and sent shockwaves through this mountain community about 30 miles southwest of Denver.
The Attack and Investigation
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley described a methodical attack in which Holly brought “quite a bit of ammunition” and repeatedly fired and reloaded his revolver handgun. The shooting created multiple crime scenes both inside and outside the school building, with evidence of gunfire damaging windows and lockers throughout the three-story facility.
“He was radicalized by some extremist network,” Kelley told reporters at a news briefing outside the school Thursday. “We want to at least give you that much about, maybe, the mindset for him.”Authorities have executed search warrants for Holly’s home, phone, and locker but have not yet identified the specific extremist network responsible for his radicalization. The investigation is ongoing, with officials examining his social media activity and digital footprint for clues about his motivations and influences.
Response and Aftermath
The swift response by students and staff following active shooter protocols likely prevented further casualties, according to law enforcement. Kelley praised the “staff and students enough for doing what they learned to do,” noting that they “locked down” and secured areas that the gunman attempted to access.
Evergreen High School will remain closed for the rest of the week and possibly into next week due to the extensive damage and ongoing investigation. The school is part of Jefferson County Public Schools, the same district that includes Columbine High School, site of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history in 1999.
Broader Context
The revelation that Holly was radicalized by an extremist network comes amid growing concern about youth radicalization globally. According to security experts, extremist groups increasingly target vulnerable young people through online platforms, encrypted messaging apps, and gaming communities. These digital spaces allow for rapid dissemination of extremist content and can accelerate the radicalization process.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that their investigation is continuing and urged anyone with information to come forward. Mental health resources have been made available to students and community members at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, which served as the reunification site following Wednesday’s shooting.
The two injured students remained in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon. Their identities have not been released, and hospital officials have not provided updates on their prognosis.
