A gunman opened fire at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas on Wednesday, leaving one person dead and two others injured, officials confirmed.

Law enforcement swarmed the federal complex after reports of shots fired shortly before noon. Images from the scene showed heavily armed officers securing the perimeter as workers were evacuated.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said during an afternoon press conference that investigators are working to determine the motive behind the attack. “This is a tragic day for our city. We will continue to support the victims and ensure our community’s safety,” Johnson said.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz also addressed reporters outside the facility, calling the shooting “a direct assault on federal law enforcement” and vowing congressional support for ICE officers.

Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect or the victims. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are assisting local police in the investigation.

The Dallas shooting comes as ICE operations remain at the center of heated national debates over immigration policy. Officials said further updates will be provided once next of kin are notified.
