Helen Hunt explains initial refusal of ‘Mad About You’ reboot

Helen Hunt reveals why she first rejected, then embraced, a ‘Mad About You’ revival.

Helen Hunt said she was certain she would never take part in a reboot of Mad About You, calling the idea “a really cheesy thing to do” during a Fan Expo Boston conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. She explained, “We were 100% sure we would never do a reboot. It seemed like a really cheesy thing to do, and we’d answered everything, and we looked down on them.”

Her perspective changed after watching the Will & Grace revival. “And then I saw Will & Grace, and I was like, it’s really good and it’s really funny. Are we maybe stupid and should think about it?” she said.

That reconsideration led to the 2019 Mad About You revival, a 12-episode Spectrum Originals run that reunited Hunt and Paul Reiser as Paul and Jamie Buchman. The storyline followed them as empty nesters after their daughter Mabel, played by Abby Quinn, left for NYU. The revival altered the 1999 series finale, which had depicted a separation and later reconciliation, instead focusing on the couple navigating middle age, dealing with issues such as marriage fatigue, menopause, and loss, while living just a few blocks from their daughter.

The finale hinted at potential for more episodes. In the last installment, Paul and Jamie hosted Mabel’s 18th birthday party, where she revealed she was leaving school for a year to help clean plastic from the Pacific Ocean. Initially resistant, they eventually accepted her decision, and Paul surprised Jamie with a long-promised trip to Tahiti.

Although reviews were mixed and the revival was designed as a limited series, making another season improbable, Hunt’s move from firm rejection to enthusiastic participation illustrated how the right story can persuade even a reluctant actor to revisit a role.
