According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, the suspect opened fire on the church grounds, killing two women and injuring two men, one of whom remains in critical condition. The assailant, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was later killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers.
The violence began around 11:30 a.m. when a Kentucky State Trooper attempted to pull the suspect near Blue Grass Airport in Fayette County. The individual responded by opening fire on the trooper, who sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Following the initial confrontation, the gunman fled the scene by carjacking a vehicle approximately 10 miles away from the airport. Law enforcement officials were able to track the vehicle’s location to the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where the suspect began firing indiscriminately on churchgoers and others on the property.
Police quickly responded to the location and engaged the shooter in a final standoff, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot. No information has yet been released regarding the shooter’s background or potential motive. However, Chief Weathers noted that there is preliminary evidence indicating the suspect may have had a personal connection to some of the victims.
“There are days like today that are extremely difficult,” said Chief Weathers during somber press conference. “Sometimes things happen, you just don’t have a reason why.”
The Richmond Road Baptist Church, a prominent local place of worship, has become the latest site of gun violence in the United States, raising renewed concerns about safety in religious and public places.
