Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed Wednesday that a shooting took place during the first week of classes at a Minneapolis Catholic school. Authorities later confirmed that at least three people were killed and 20 others were injured.
Walz said he had been briefed on the incident at Annunciation Catholic School. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” the governor wrote on X.
A staff member who answered the phone at Annunciation said students were being evacuated following the shooting. According to the school’s website, Annunciation is a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade Catholic institution. An all-school Mass had been scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, just two days after the first day of the academic year.
According to a Justice Department official cited by Reuters, the shooter was among those dead. The incident occurred at the Annunciation Church, which also houses the school.
The City of Minneapolis announced on X that there was “no active threat to the community at this time,” adding that “the shooter is contained.” A reunification zone was established at the school for families of children.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he had been fully briefed on the shooting and confirmed that the FBI was at the scene. “I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were on site. “We are aware of reports of a shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota. FBI agents are on scene, and we ask everyone to keep potential victims, civilians or law enforcement in harm’s way in your prayers,” Patel wrote on X. “The FBI will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
