How will Florida’s $280 million expansion impact homeowners under the My Safe Florida Home program?
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida officials have announced a substantial $280 million boost to the My Safe Florida Home program, a state initiative aimed at helping homeowners strengthen their properties against severe storms while also reducing insurance premiums. The newly approved funds, part of the 2025–2026 fiscal year budget, are expected to benefit 45,000 applicants already in the system, with additional homeowners eligible to apply starting August 4.
The program provides free wind mitigation inspections and offers matching grants to eligible homeowners. These inspections help identify structural vulnerabilities and recommend upgrades that can withstand hurricane-force winds. Even without completing the upgrades, undergoing an inspection alone has led to substantial savings for many residents. According to Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, participating homeowners have saved an average of $1,014 on their insurance premiums simply through these evaluations.
Of the new funding, $94 million has been allocated directly for grants, while $1.5 million is set aside to cover the cost of inspections. A significant portion—$180 million—has been earmarked as a one-time injection to help the program address its growing backlog of applications. With more severe weather threatening the state each year, the urgency to protect residential structures has never been greater.
To qualify for assistance under the My Safe Florida Home program, homeowners must meet several key requirements. The property must be insured for no more than $700,000, built prior to 2008, and must have completed a state-run wind mitigation inspection. Once qualified, homeowners can receive a grant matching $2 for every $1 they spend on approved improvements, up to a maximum of $10,000.
The list of eligible improvements includes roof-to-wall reinforcements, roof deck attachments, and the installation of impact-resistant windows and doors. These upgrades not only reduce storm damage risk but also increase the property’s overall market value and improve long-term affordability for insurance coverage.
The program has drawn attention in recent years as Florida’s insurance market continues to experience stress from escalating storm damage claims and rising premium costs. Many homeowners across the state have turned to the My Safe Florida Home program as a critical means of safeguarding their property and managing insurance expenses.
State officials have emphasized that the program’s success depends heavily on community participation. The upcoming reapplication window on August 4 offers a renewed opportunity for thousands of Floridians to take advantage of the benefits. Local governments are also encouraging residents to schedule inspections early, anticipating another surge in demand.
This significant funding increase highlights the state’s continued commitment to building hurricane resilience at the household level. With another active hurricane season expected, authorities hope the additional resources will reduce both physical and financial risks for Floridians living in high-impact zones.
