Newsom to Host Texas Democrats Blocking Redistricting Vote

Texas Democrats in California as Newsom backs their redistricting protest.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will join House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and other top California Democrats on Friday to host Texas lawmakers who left their state to block a Republican-led redistricting plan. The location of the event has not yet been disclosed.

The Texas House Democrats have been out of the state since Monday, breaking quorum to stop a vote on a map that could give Republicans five additional U.S. House seats. This week, they have also visited Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts, prompting Texas Republicans to pursue arrest warrants for the absent legislators.

Newsom has been a vocal critic of the Texas proposal, responding with his own plan to redraw California’s congressional districts in a way that could expand Democratic representation. He has said that effort would move forward if Texas or other GOP-led states proceed with their redistricting plans.

Earlier this week, California Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley announced legislation to ban mid-decade redistricting nationwide, framing it as a direct response to Newsom’s proposal.

Friday’s meeting in Sacramento County is expected to focus on California’s potential redistricting changes, which Newsom and other state leaders say would counter Republican moves in Texas and other states. CBS News Sacramento will carry the event live at around 2 p.m.
