Russia is quietly churning out fake content posing as US news, with a pro-Russian propaganda group exploiting major news events to circulate disinformation while spoofing respected outlets.
According to NewsGuard, which tracks misinformation, the campaign has been identified by Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center as Storm-1679 and has been monitored since at least 2022. The group uses high-profile news moments to push fabricated stories disguised as coming from trusted organizations such as ABC News, BBC and most recently POLITICO.
This year, the operation has concentrated on producing false reports tied to the German SNAP elections and the upcoming Moldovan parliamentary vote. The same campaign also attempted to spread misleading claims about the war in Ukraine ahead of President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for Friday.
