San Mateo Red Light Crash Kills Mother, Leaves Two Young Sons Critically Injured

San Mateo red light crash kills mother in a devastating Thursday evening tragedy that has rocked the Bay Area. Her two sons, just 5 and 7 years old, remain hospitalized in critical condition after their vehicle was broadsided by an SUV that ran a red light.

Did a red light violation cause a fatal crash in San Mateo?

A 30-year-old woman was killed instantly, and her two children severely injured, when their Toyota Prius was struck by a Ford SUV that police say ran a red light near Highway 92 and Alameda de las Pulgas on July 31, 2025. The impact was described by officers as “violent,” with the mother pronounced dead at the scene. Her children were rushed to a nearby hospital and are fighting for their lives.

According to the San Mateo Police Department (SMPD), the SUV exited the eastbound off-ramp of Highway 92, disregarding a clearly red signal, and crashed into the Prius, which was traveling northbound and had the right of way. The driver of the Ford, who was the sole occupant of the SUV, sustained only minor injuries.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and are providing support through our Chaplain, Peer Support Program, and Youth Services Unit,” SMPD said in an official statement.

What do we know about the San Mateo red light crash investigation?

Authorities have not released the identities of either the deceased mother or the SUV driver, citing the sensitivity of the case and the ongoing investigation. However, police confirmed the Ford driver was not impaired, though it remains unclear why he failed to stop at the red light.

The incident triggered a full-scale response. The eastbound on-ramp and off-ramp for Highway 92 were shut down, and traffic was closed on Alameda de las Pulgas between West 20th Avenue and Barneson Avenue for over four hours. Police also addressed false social media rumors, clarifying there were no reports of a car going off an overpass or hitting a light pole, and that the family was not in the SUV.

The children’s conditions, while critical, were described as stable as of Friday morning.

“We are still piecing together the full sequence of events,” said a San Mateo PD spokesperson. “The crash was preventable—and the cost was a young mother’s life.”
