Commissioner Bethel stated that police had already responded to disturbances on the same block the night before, citing arrests and ongoing monitoring throughout the weekend. In fact, officers had just returned from a separate call when they heard gunfire and rushed back to the area.

One person has been taken into custody with a firearm, though their involvement in the shooting remains under investigation.

This tragedy occurred during what Bethel described as a violent Fourth of July weekend for the city. Philadelphia saw six homicides and several shootings, including eight people injured at a South Philadelphia nightclub.

Despite the surge in violence, Bethel shared that shooting in Philadelphia homicides are down 12% and shooting are down 10% compared to the previous year. He also highlighted a 95% clearance rate for the department’s Homicide Unit and a 36% clearance rate for the Shooting Investigation Group.

As the city mourns and investigations continue, residents of Gary Ferry and the wide Philadelphia community are once again grappling with the impacts of gun violence. Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
