President Trump is weighing the possibility of reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, according to people familiar with the discussions, following significant financial contributions from cannabis companies to his political groups.
At a $1 million-a-plate fundraiser held earlier this month at his New Jersey golf club, Trump told attendees he was interested in pursuing the change, the sources said on condition of anonymity.
The move, which the Biden administration began exploring but did not complete before leaving office, would ease restrictions on the purchase and sale of marijuana, potentially boosting the profitability of the multibillion-dollar cannabis industry.
