In a striking rebuke, tech mogul Elon Musk has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s newly passed $3.8 trillion agenda bill, warning that it severely undermines ongoing DOGE reforms aimed at streamlining government efficiency and cutting wasteful spending.
Musk Raises Alarm Over Threats to DOGE Reforms
During an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Musk expressed disappointment, stating:
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budged deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE reforms team is doing.”
The bill officially called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes provisions like extended tax cuts, Medicaid work requirements, increased border security, and rollbacks of clean energy incentives. Yet, according to Musk, these changes put DOGE reforms at serious risk by reversing progress made in cutting federal excess.
How the Agenda Bill Undermines DOGE Reforms
The DOGE reforms initiative (Department of Government Efficiency) was founded in early 2025 with the goal of reducing waste across federal agencies, modernizing outdated systems, and enforcing fiscal responsibility.
Musk, a key figure in the effort, helped initiate government wide audits and tech upgrades. However, with the new bill projected to add $3.8 trillion to the deficit by 2034, Musk said bluntly:
“A bill can be big or beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both specially if it derails DOGE reforms.”
Political Fallout form Clashing Over DOGE Reforms
Musk’s statements mark a notable shift in his alignment with Trump While he was once considered a supporter, this split over DOGE reforms exposes internal GOP tensions around spending and reform.
Although Musk has stepped back from an active role in Washington, he remains a vocal advocate for the principles behind DOGE reforms, calling for smart, tech-driven restructuring of federal operations.
