According to the Pawleys Island Police Department, the incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday. Emergency services responded to a report of “multiple swimmers in distress.” Childers and another individual reportedly jumped into the water to help a family of five struggling in the rip current.

While the five people were saved, Childers was swept away. A search operation was launched, and at 6:15 p.m., his body was recovered. The community mourns the loss of a man described as a devoted father, husband, and public servant.

“He died trying to save others,” police stated in a release.
