Why Trump Reinforced the Truck Drivers English Requirement
Trump’s April 2025 executive order reactivated the longstanding U.S. law requiring English proficiency for all commercial drivers. This reversed a 2016 guidance that previously allowed flexibility. The order follows another mandate from March making English the official language of the U.S.
Local Companies Take Action to Protect Drivers
Fletes Sotelo, a logistic firm in Ciudad Juárez, launched mandatory English classes six weeks ago. Its own, Manuel Sotelo, who is also the local transport association president, said all drivers must learn basic English to continue crossing into El Paso.
